Abstract
The objective of this article is to analyse the transfer mechanism and tensile behavior of combined connections with friction-type high-strength bolts and welds. To achieve the goal, finite element model for the combined connections was established first. Both stress distribution of the combined connections and the whole progress curves of loading and displacement were analysed. Finite element model is validated against existing typical tests. The whole progress curves of loading and displacement consist of three parts: linear process, reinforced process, and yielding stage. The strength ratio of weld to bolt is the main factor that determines the failure model of the combined connections and the shape of the whole progress curves of loading and displacement. Thus the effect of the strength ratio of bolts to welds should be considerd in the design method of the combined connections. The results can provided reference for the desgin of the combined connections.
