Abstract
A total of 110 school buildings were selected for vibration tests based on a pulse method in order to identify the fundamental periods. New formulas for the estimation of the fundamental periods of multi-storey masonry structures with large-bay were presented. Three kinds of structures were considered, the structure without a ring beam and a structural column, the structure with ring beams, and the structure with ring beams and structural columns. The least squares regression analysis was employed to analyze the effect of the number of floor, height, height-width ratio and length-width ratio to the fundamental periods. The formulas were verified by using three examples. The results showed the structure with ring beams and structural columns can reduce the rate of change of the fundamental period. The length-width ratio effect is far less than that of a height-width ratio. And the height-width ratio effect is far less than that of the number of floor and height. New empirical formulas were derived.
